TATIANA SUTHERLANDDistrict Councillor for Bracebridge

Environmental protection. Affordable housing. Strong local health care.

I'm running for re-election to continue representing Bracebridge with an independent voice and a focus on the issues that matter to our community.

Tatiana Sutherland, candidate for District of Muskoka Council

At the District Table

Four Years of Doing the Homework

I was elected as a Bracebridge District Councillor in 2022. Since then I've worked on the environmental, housing and health care files that shape everyday life in Muskoka — reading the reports, asking questions and bringing what residents tell me back to the Council table.

Environment

Protecting Muskoka

Protecting Muskoka's natural environment has always been one of my priorities. Our lakes, forests and watersheds aren't just part of our landscape — they're fundamental to our quality of life, our economy and what makes Muskoka special.

This term, District Council has continued important work to strengthen environmental protection and watershed planning, including work on Lake System Health policies and environmental resiliency.

I strongly support planning policies that protect our natural environment. Growth and housing are important, but where and how we build matters. Good planning means looking beyond one development or one property and considering the cumulative impact of the decisions we make over time.

Protecting what makes Muskoka special while planning responsibly for its future is one of the most important jobs we have.

Housing

Affordable Housing

Muskoka's housing shortage affects our workforce, families, seniors and the long-term sustainability of our communities. We need more housing — and we also need new approaches to making sure some of that housing remains affordable.

I serve as Chair of the Muskoka Community Land Trust, a community-led non-profit working to create permanently affordable housing in Muskoka.

There isn't one solution to the housing crisis. We need municipalities, the private sector and community organizations working together, trying new approaches and getting housing built.

  • Florence Street Project — Huntsville

Moving forward as a major mixed-income rental housing development, with permanently affordable homes as part of the community. The project is also intended to demonstrate an approach that can be replicated elsewhere in Muskoka.

Health Care

Strong Local Health Care

Access to good health care close to home matters at every stage of life. As a member of Muskoka's Health Services Committee, I've been proud to work on strengthening the services our residents rely on — from paramedic and community health services to long-term care and supports that help seniors remain healthy and independent.

This term, we've continued investing in Muskoka Paramedic Services and Community Paramedicine, helping connect residents with care in their own homes and reducing unnecessary trips to the emergency department.

We've also focused on recruitment and staffing in District long-term care homes and supported efforts to improve access to primary and community care.

There is still more to do. Muskoka has a growing and aging population, and access to doctors and other health professionals remains a challenge for too many residents.

I'll continue working for strong local health services, better access to care and a system that allows people to get the support they need as close to home as possible.

About Tatiana

Three Generations Call Bracebridge Home

Three generations of my family call Bracebridge home.

My daughter is eight, and my parents and mother-in-law — all in their 80s — live here too. My husband and I are raising our daughter here, close to her grandparents and surrounded by a community we care deeply about.

I was elected as a Bracebridge District Councillor in 2022. Over the past four years, I've tried to be a councillor who does the homework, listens, asks questions and isn't afraid to speak up when something deserves a closer look.

My professional background includes municipal government, urban planning, communications and community advocacy. I also serve as Chair of the Muskoka Community Land Trust, where I'm directly involved in working toward practical solutions to Muskoka's affordable housing shortage.

Having three generations of my own family here gives me a simple perspective on public service. I want Bracebridge to be a place where young people can see a future, families can afford to put down roots, seniors can continue to be part of the community they helped build, and all of us can count on strong local health care.

And through all of that, I want us to protect the natural environment and character that make Muskoka the place it is.
